The fifteenth Century was a time of prosperity in the Weald and it led to a remarkable building boom which produced many substantial farmhouses which have a distinctive open hall in the centre flanked at either end by multi-storeyed wings. In the most classic example the wings are jettied at the front while the central section is recessed. These houses have become iconic in the landscape., This course is a practical session in the delightful village of Robertsbridge in East Sussex. After a preliminary introduction to the main characteristics of a Wealden Hall House and other types of domestic architecture, we will walk round the village identifying and discussing the townscape and its relevance to Wealden social history.
