A Creative Mosaic Project

Mosaics is the art of creating images using small pieces of coloured glass, stone or other material, called tessarae. The course will introduce you to the craft and give you some practical experience; initially the tutor will demonstrate basic mosaic techniques such as; planning your design on paper, choosing a colour scheme, transferring your design to a mosaic base, cutting and shaping tessarae, placing and adhering tessarae on your chosen base, grouting the design and cleaning the finished product. Students will work on one project., , You will be instructed in the basic principles of producing a mosaic project (please read below for appropriate sizes, projects and bases). You will need to: understand the potential benefits from the programme of study. Read and interpret tasks. Communicate responses that are clear, logical and understandable. Manage your own time. Undertake critical reflection and evaluation and be motivated to develop creative skills and enhance/develop personal skills., This course is suitable for all students but will be of especial interest to students who have already studied with us. A degree of manual dexterity is required.

Entry requirements

Please bring an appropriate size base for your project, the best base to start with for beginners is 6mm depth MDF approx A3 size. More experienced students may work on a different project but should consult with the tutor before the course starts if they are unsure about its practicability within the time available The suggestions below are suitable for the time available., Other ideas of things to decorate are; an unglazed terracotta saucer approx 30cm diameter; a picture frame with a flat, wide surface; a shallow wooden or bamboo dish approx 30cm diameter; an unvarnished small wooden box or tray. Wooden or MDF flat baseboards can be bought from mosaic suppliers in a variety of interesting shapes. DIY suppliers should be able to cut a baseboard for you. , Contact the centre/tutor should you wish to ask about a different base for your project, , Students will need to pay in the class for their mosaic materials. The cost will be approximately £10- £12 depending on the project. , Please bring you own notebook/sketchpad and pencils., You may wish to bring a packed lunch although the centre has its own thriving café and there are plenty of places to eat in town., , You should wear closed toe shoes and use protective gloves (supplied) if you are allergic to grout or if asked to do so by the tutor.
