Portraiture - Beginners

This Portrait painting course will guide you through the stages of building up a portrait in oils including colour mixing and layering using glazes. Working with a Model you will explore how to approach getting a likeness, through understanding the proportions of the face, foreshortening, and mixing the right skin tones for the painting. You will look at Artists work both contemporary and historical to help you with your ideas and paintings. You will explore various mediums, including dry media i.e. pencils and pastels as well as watercolour, acrylic and oil painting. Students who have have an interest in Portraiture and would like to create a likeness in oils., It is important to note that art courses are practical and require a degree of manual dexterity for you to participate fully and get the most out of the course.

Entry requirements

If you are a new student and have no materials please wait for your tutor's advice on what to buy. However, you should bring an A4 sketchbook of good quality cartridge paper, preferably with a hard cover and ring bound and a variety of pencils.You will need to provide your own materials and these will vary in cost according to the course requirements. If you have any materials/equipment that might be appropriate please bring them with you.
