The course will encourage you to explore your creative mind and help you develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for. The course is delivered largely through practical work; students choose their own coursework focus and learn through experimental work.

Name: Design Technology (Product Design) A2/A Level 3 Qualification title: Design Technology (Product Design) A2/A Level 3 Qualification type: GCE A/AS Level or equivalent Assessment Written Examinations (40%) Advanced Innovation Challenge Requires candidates to work with materials in a supervised examination room or workshop over 3 sessions. Session 1: Candidates use their job bag as inspiration to produce a specification and design brief using sketches, notes and models to describe their designs. Session 2: Candidates develop one design and model it. They then record their thoughts and evaluate against their specification. Session 3: Candidates reflect on their design in a written examination, two weeks after the main examination. Examination Format Component 1: Candidates answer one question from eight based on each of the material focus areas. Component 2: Candidates answer one question from eight. The questions are designed to assess the candidate's ability to respond to a design situation. Unit 1: 7 hours at the end of Year 12 Unit 3: 2 hours at the end of Year 13 Coursework (60%) Coursework - Product Study: 30% Design portfolio (approximately 20 A3 sheets or equivalent power point slides) involving the analysis and production of improvements for a product of the candidate's choice Assessment Criteria: Product analysis; strengths and weaknesses; moral implications; development and innovation; testing and results summary. Coursework Project: Design, Make and Evaluate: 30% Design folder (approximately 25 A3 sheets or equivalent power point slides) including manufactured outcome(s). Single project Design and Make task. Assessment Criteria: Design brief; information and inspiration; design specification; design development making and innovation; testing; marketing presentation; review and reflection. Students choose their material focus, either resistant materials or textiles in order to carry out their coursework projects.
