The CACHE Diploma course is a three 'A' level. It can provide 360 UCAS points equivalent to three 'A' grades in traditional GCE courses. It develops the knowledge, skills and experience to enable students to work in a child care setting. The course is a level 3 qualification and is listed on the QCA framework of Nationally Accredited Qualifications. This course is widely accepted by red brick and metropolitan universities to study a range of subjects at degree level. Childhood Studies develops the knowledge, skills and experience to enable students to work in a child care setting. Students will learn practical and theoretical skills on how babies and children learn and develop. This will include much child psychology and you will have the opportunity to put this knowledge into practice by working in a range of different placements two days per week. The following units will be covered: - Observation and assessment - Supporting young children - The developing child from conception to 16 years - Promoting a healthy environment - Play, curriculum and early children's learning - The role of the early years practitioner - Keeping children safe - Anti-discriminatory/anti bias practice - The development of professional skills with children's education - Care of sick children - Nutrition & healthy food for children - Developing children's communication, language & literacy skills Students spend two days per week in a minimum of three placements with 0 - 8 year olds. Students will be taught each unit by a variety of experienced staff and will learn to deal with pressure, meet deadlines and work within a team environment.

Assessment of practical competence will take place in the work placement. Each of the 12 units has a specific submission date. Each of these marks goes towards your 3 'A' Level grades. You will have a written paper in the Spring term of Year 12 which must be passed to progress to Year 13 and will also go towards your final 3 'A' Level grades. The final assessment is a 5000 word research task, set and marked by the examination board, which is submitted in the January of Year 13. This will also go towards your final 3 'A' Level grades.
