Mathematics The aim is to encourage students to acquire the skills needed to use technology such as calculators and computers effectively, to develop an awareness of the relevance of mathematics to other fields of study, to the world of work and to society in general, and to take increasing responsibility for their own learning and the evaluation of their own mathematical development. The A and AS level comprise of pure and applied mathematics in the ratio 2 to 1. For the full A level, three units are assessed in the summer of the first year and another three in the final summer. At AS level the content of the pure mathematics modules covers algebra, functions, co-ordinate geometry, calculus, sequences, series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms. The applied mathematics module is Mechanics 1 which includes modelling, motion, forces, momentum, Newton's laws of motion and connected particles. At A2 level the pure mathematics develops and extends what has already been studied, with the addition of vector geometry and numerical methods. The second applied unit is Statistics 1, which covers ideas such as binomial distribution, normal distribution, correlation and regression. The examining board is AQA. Plan and interpret information from different sources; Carry out multi-stage calculations. Present findings, explain results and justify choice of methods; Contribute to discussions and present ideas; Read and synthesise information. Mathematics is a 'facilitating subject' and therefore opens many doors in Higher Education and beyond. In particular, it is needed for Mathematics and related degrees e.g. Engineering, Sciences, Computing, Finance/Economics, etc. It is crucial for careers in Finance and Banking, Natural and Life Sciences, Operational Research, Mathematics and Statistical Research, Engineering, Insurance, Information Technology, Education, Medicine, Defence and the Military, Space and Astronomy, and Intelligence Services.
