This course provides students with the opportunity to specialise in systems and control at a higher level. It provides natural progression from the related GCSE course within design and technology. Sixty percent of the course will require students to design, make, test and evaluate a range of products related to mechanical, pneumatic and micro-electronic systems. At this level emphasis is placed upon the design of products for the real world and students will learn about production methods, the application of modern materials and components, and how microprocessors are intergraded into manufacturing systems. Throughout the course students will develop communication and practical skills through the completion of a number of open-ended and focused design activities. Environmental issues are of high priority within this course and students are encouraged to consider aspects of sustainability when designing and making control systems. The two written examinations will focus on knowledge and understanding in relation to designing and innovation, human responsibility, materials, components and processes, product analysis, public interaction, industrial and commercial practice, production systems and control.
