Students will gain confidence in their writing as they are taught: How to use the senses, figurative language and to correct grammar and punctuation. How to understand the structure and shape of narrative writing. How to create believable characters, placed in a setting that is influenced by its atmosphere. How to build fictional structures with plots designed with tension and conflict that lead to a believable and marketable ending. How to critically analyse and revise writing assignments. How to set up a manuscript and to create a convincing covering letter and synopsis. How to appreciate the various poetic forms, their rhythms and rhymes. How to utilise the current markets for fiction, non-fiction and poetry. This course will be taught and assessed with discussions, short writing exercises and examples of good writing. By examining the work of successful authors and poets, attendees will be encouraged to develop their own style.Students are welcome to re-enrol; each term in the year will have a different focus.
