Level 1 Award British Sign Language

The Level 1 British Sign Language course is divided into three units. Each one is completed with a short one-to-one assessment that you will undertake with the tutor. Learners will be introduced to the following: - Recognise variations in the way deaf people communicate. - Signing at a basic level (approximately 400 signs). - Finger spelling, names and places. - Responding to simple signed questions. - Being able to retell a short signed story. - Understanding receptive skills in sign. - Demonstrating signing skills. BSL Level 1 Certificate is a commonly recognised starting point for people involved, or working, with the Deaf Community, and Level 1 needs to be passed before moving on to the Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language. You will be able to communicate with deaf people, and gain a better understanding of the deaf culture and community. You can learn more about the qualification, and its structure by visiting the awarding body's website at www.signature.org.uk.You will be taught and assessed by various methods including: - Practical demonstration - Group and pair work - Games - Role mode and role play - DVDs - Conversation Assessments will largely be conducted by the course tutor, though they will be recorded for submission to the Awarding Body. Assessments are likely to take place on a Tuesday evening on three occasions during the year. However, the dates will be agreed early on in the course.This qualification may assist students to gain work, or progress their career, in care, education or any other area where an ability to sign is required.
