Over the two years of the course there are four units of study and you will complete two of these each year. Year12: Candidates study and work with a variety of materials and components used in the design and making of products. They work in both two and three dimensions. Candidates gain an understanding of industrial and commercial practices within the area of design and manufacture. Unit 1 is titled 'Portfolio of Creative Skills' and requires candidates to investigate existing products and develop their creativity and skills by designing, modelling and making a variety of exciting products. Unit 2 is titled 'Design and Technology in Practice' and develops candidates' knowledge and understanding of a wide range of materials and processes including those used commercially. Year 13: The specification offers candidates the opportunity to further develop their knowledge and practical skills from AS. Candidates continue to design and manufacture alongside developing an understanding of the processes, procedures and important issues of commercial manufacturing. Unit 3 is titled 'Designing for the Future. This examined unit is focused towards products and their analysis, sustainability and contemporary design issues. Unit 4 is titled 'Commercial Design'. Candidates are required to produce a design portfolio and manufacture a marketable product of their own choice which fully demonstrates their designing, making and evaluation skills and creativity, flair and innovation.
