German (A2)

UPDATED 20161010 13:19:37

The A-level German course builds on the knowledge and skills students have acquired at GCSE and allows students to build a much deeper understanding of the diverse aspects of German culture and the culture of other German speaking countries, such as Austria and Switzerland. Our A-level course is underpinned by a strong grounding in the grammatical structures needed to speak and write with skill, accuracy and poise. Authentic spoken and written materials are used throughout the course, exposing students to genuine and authentic language, preparing them for terminal exams, further study and life outside the classroom. Candidates will study literary texts and films that link to the themes included within the course and also have the opportunity to prepare their own independent research project in preparation for the speaking element of the exams. The German A-level course has been designed to develop linguistic competency in addition to a focus on how the German-speaking world has been shaped, socially and culturally, and how it continues to change and develop. Students will explore German youth culture, the changing state of the family and other modern and traditional values in German-speaking countries. Aspects of political life in the German-speaking world including Germany’s role within the European Union, the re-unification of Germany and political engagement among young people will be explored. In addition, current issues such as immigration and integration and multiculturalism will be discussed. Students also study technological, environmental and social change and the potential issues and benefits that these may bring to society. While naturally aiming to develop linguistic skill and knowledge of Germanic culture, studying A-level German also cultivates a range of transferable skills including communication, critical thinking, research skills and creativity, which are invaluable to students wishing to go on to higher education or employment.
