Spanish (A2)

UPDATED 20161010 13:16:54

The A-level Spanish course allows students to develop a much deeper understanding of the diverse aspects of Spanish and Latin American culture than they could during KS4, while building on the knowledge and skills they have already acquired at GCSE. Candidates will study literary texts and films that link to the themes included within the course and also have the opportunity to prepare their own independent research project in preparation for the speaking element of the course. This A-level qualification has been designed to develop linguistic competency in addition to a focus on how the Spanish-speaking world has been shaped, socially and culturally, and how it continues to change and develop. Students will explore the role of women in Hispanic society alongside other modern and traditional values in Spanish-speaking countries. Regional identity and cultural heritage within Spain will be investigated, touching on historic, artistic, political and linguistic issues. Current issues such as immigration and integration will be discussed and the melting pot of cultures that exists within Hispanic society will be uncovered. Students also study technological, environmental and social change and the potential issues and benefits that these may bring to society. Our A-level course is underpinned by a strong grounding in the grammatical structures needed to speak and write with skill, accuracy and poise. Authentic spoken and written materials are used throughout the course, exposing students to genuine and authentic language, preparing them for terminal exams, further study and life outside the classroom. While naturally aiming to develop linguistic skill and knowledge of Hispanic culture, studying A-level Spanish also cultivates a range of transferable skills including communication, critical thinking, research skills and creativity, which are invaluable to students wishing to go on to higher education or employment.
