The A-level French course builds on the knowledge and skills students have acquired at GCSE and allows students to delve much deeper into diverse aspects of French culture and the culture of other French speaking countries. The course is designed to develop linguistic skills in addition to a focus on how French-speaking society has been shaped, socially and culturally, and how it continues to change. Candidates will study current trends in French-speaking artistic culture, including francophone music and cinema and will explore the French political landscape. Current issues, such as immigration, will be explored and candidates will look at the extent to which younger generations are politically engaged and the way in which political power is expressed in France through actions such as strikes and demonstrations. Students also study technological, environmental and social change and the potential issues and benefits that these may bring to society. Candidates will study literary texts and films that link to the themes included within the course and also have the opportunity to prepare their own independent research project. Our A-level course is underpinned by a strong grounding in the grammatical structures needed to speak and write with skill, accuracy and poise. Authentic spoken and written materials are used throughout the course, exposing students to genuine and authentic language, preparing them for terminal exams, further study and life outside the classroom. While naturally aiming to develop linguistic skill and knowledge of francophone culture, studying A-level French also cultivates a range of transferable skills including communication, critical thinking, research skills and creativity, which are invaluable to students wishing to go on to higher education or employment.
Name: French A2 Qualification title: GCE A Level in French Qualification type: GCE A/AS Level or equivalent Assessment All external exams are terminal exams and take place at the end of Year 13. There are three exams in total: Paper 1: Listening, reading and writing. This is a written exam which is 2 hours 30 minutes long and is worth 50% of the final A-level. Candidates must respond to spoken and written passages either non-verbally or in French. One fifth of the marks is for translation from English to French and from French to English. Paper 2: Writing. This is a written exam which is 2 hours long and is worth 20% of the final a-level. Candidates must write two short essays and will have a choice of essay questions on a set film or set text that they will have studied during the course. Paper 3: Speaking. This is an oral exam which will last between 21 and 23 minutes (including 5 minutes preparation time) and is worth 30% of the final A-level. This exam has three sections: a 5 minute discussion based on a stimulus card; a 2 minute presentation by the candidate based on an individual research project; and a 10 minute discussion also based on the research project.
