History A Level

UPDATED 20161007 14:33:32

At a time where young people are bombarded by a greater wealth of information from a wider variety of sources than any generation that has ever lived, the study of History enables you to develop essential skills in analysis and reliability, as well as gaining a broad understanding of the key issues involved in shaping the world today. This course is designed for students who have an interest in how the world has developed over the last 200 years both in Britain and abroad as well as students who enjoy the rigor of investigation, debate and discussion. You will study material in two different centuries as well as three different countries. You will examine political, social, economic and cultural developments that affected the lives of ordinary people as well as the impact of great historical figures. There is also an opportunity to complete coursework at A Level and conduct your own independent research relating to the topic of Crime and Punishment 1830-1965. You will be encouraged to be persuasive, draw your own conclusions and form judgements based on the evidence. In its wider context, History is a subject highly regarded by universities and prepares students for a wide variety of career opportunities from law to journalism and business to public service. Any career that rewards clear thinking, articulate speaking and the ability to ask and answer complicated questions about how the world works, will be open to a well-trained historian.
