Performing takes place throughout the course culminating a final recital, expected at the level of Grade 6 (ABRSM) or above Composing techniques are investigated and skills developed, with two compositions written during the course. The Western Classical Tradition: The Development of the Symphony (1750-1900) includes the study of set works by Haydn and Mendelssohn. Other optional units include Musical Theatre, Rock and Pop (1960-2000) and Into the 20th Century. Students are expected to improve their musical skills by taking leading roles in the extra-curricular life of the department, including performances in the local community.
