Religious Studies

UPDATED 20161007 07:33:22

In this course you will be exploring some deep and difficult questions about life within the context of disciplined academic study. The course focusses on the philosophy of religion and religious ethics rather than a systematic study of a particular religion. You will be encouraged to engage with some of the big questions with which religion and philosophy is concerned such as: Is there any evidence for the existence of God'; Is life after death a coherent and intelligible notion?' Is there such a thing as 'the good'? How do we make moral decisions? You will be encouraged to develop interest in, and enthusiasm for, the rigorous study of philosophical and religious issues and to relate this study to the wider world. You will learn to approach these issues in an enquiring, critical and empathetic manner, and be expected to build up clear knowledge and understanding of the topics studied whilst reflecting on your own values, opinions and attitudes in the light of this learning. You will also learn to sustain a critical line of argument and justify a point of view.
