GCE AS in Media Studies

UPDATED 20161006 14:18:19

We live in a media saturated society with access to images and information 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Studying the media develops independent thought and critical reasoning. This course explores how different types of media are used, by whom and in whose interests. You will analyse the ways in which different groups are represented by the media and how these representations can create particular ideas about groups of people. You will learn how the camera can be used to create a specific effect on the audience, how lighting, props, locations can be used for effect, the way editing can be used and how sound creates both atmosphere and realism. This course also allows you to create your own productions; the opening to a horror film in the first year and a music video in the second. For each production you will create a blog or WordPress where you will include analysis of similar productions, a potential audience and discussion for your planning processes.
