This course encompasses both Language skills and Literature in a way that complements each other. Students are required to read widely; both in terms of the set texts as well as other fiction, but also there is a requirement that they read theory around elements of the course. Powers of literary analysis are combined with the analysis of stylistics and linguistic analysis to evaluate how texts (both fiction and non-fiction) create meaning as well as how contexts affect the content. There is a creative writing element, where students have to create a text for a specific purpose, audience and genre, they must then analyse their own work. Students will be expected to complete an independent investigation into a them, idea or style within literary and non-literary texts. For students who have a love of reading and really want the opportunity to develop their interpretative skills and widen their own range, this is the course for them. The course prepares students well for Higher Education courses in English, Law or in combination with other subjects. It makes a good companion with other Arts subjects and helps candidates explore and argue their case, which is so vital for academic debate.
