This course allows you to develop your own creativity, capability and entrepreneurial skills, to apply knowledge and understanding to a wide range of technological activities and to develop your critical thinking and collaborative skills. You should have a strong interest in designing, modelling, making and evaluating products or systems and in the processes and products of design and technological activity. In the first year, for Unit 1, you will produce a Portfolio of Creative Skills. The focus of this assessed portfolio is related to the route that the student is following and it constitutes 60% of the total first year mark. Unit 2, Design and Technology in Practice, is externally assessed and constitutes 40% of the total first year mark. In the second year you will study Unit 3, Designing for the Future, and will be assessed on your knowledge and understanding of a range of modern design and manufacturing practices and contemporary design issues. Unit 4, Commercial Design, will give you the opportunity to design and develop a commercial product of your choice. For Units 1 and 4, a Graphic Products student would typically create a product from one of the prescribed pathways. Conceptual design incorporates a wide range of 3D products with associated graphics, for example: packaging design, product/industrial design, point of sale display and vehicle design. The built environment focuses on the surroundings that provide a setting for human activity, including architecture, interior design, exhibition design, theatre sets and garden design
