What is it? Computer science consists of computer systems, algorithms, programming including a programming project. You will develop problem solving skills by applying the knowledge and understanding encountered. What will I study? Component 1 - Computer systems exam, 140 marks. This includes components of a computer and its uses, structure of a processor, types of processor, input, output and storage, software and software development, systems software, application generation, software development and types of programming languages, exchange of data compression and encryption, databases, networks and web technologies, data types, data structures and algorithms, data types, data structures and Boolean algebra, legal, moral, cultural and ethical issues and computer related legislation and moral and ethical issues. Component 2 - Algorithms and programming exam, 140 marks. This includes computational thinking (thinking abstractly, thinking ahead, thinking procedurally, thinking logically and thinking concurrently), problem solving and programming, programming techniques and computational methods, algorithms, searching and sorting algorithms. Component 3 - Programming project - coursework, 70 marks, this includes analysis of the problem, design of the problem, developing the solution and producing an evaluation. Assessment: Two examined units - component 1 and 2 at the end of A2 1 and a programming project - internally assessed and moderated, 80% exam and 20% coursework. Where does it lead? Students go on to study computer science, software engineering or computer science and networks at university. Students with computing skills are highly employable as network managers, software engineers, database designers, computer engineers, web designers, software maintenance engineers, software testers and developers, lecturers in higher education and many more computer based careers.
