You will develop your GCSE skills to a much higher level and become an expert in the study of English Literature. Your powers of literary analysis will be tested and developed. You need to be an avid reader to succeed on this course and to read outside the classroom as well as studying the set texts. The minimum number of set texts is eight and will include a Shakespeare play as well as other pre 1900 texts and a post 2000 texts. There is of course no limit to the number of texts you may read independently. You will develop the ability to make connections between texts and apply your knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation to a much deeper level than at GCSE. You will explore relationships between texts in a way which illuminates the significance of cultural and contextual influences on writers and on readers. In your second year you will undertake an independent task (the coursework unit) which will be worth 20% of your grade and may include a creative element. Other elements will be assessed through examinations at the end of the two year course. You will make links between the various elements of the course during the two years and demonstrate your knowledge and skills throughout.
