Year 12 (AS) MEST 1 - Investigating the Media In Investigating Media, you'll learn the fundamentals of media forms and platforms and the concepts which lie beneath the surface, as well as the role of marketing and promotion of these products. MEST 2 - Creating the Media Creating Media takes you through the production process, from researching the codes and conventions of professional media products to producing products of your own. You are then required to evaluate the success of these products. Year 13 (A2) MEST 3 - Critical Perspectives In this unit you will study different ways of explaining and understanding the media and how it works in covering how issues are represented by the media as well as the impact of new media. MEST 4 - Research and Production For this unit you will carry out a critical investigation into one area of the media that interests you and then produce an individual piece of work that compliments your investigation. This gives you the chance to really understand the relationship between research and practical production. How will I be assessed? AS Level MEST 1 - 2 hour examination externally set and marked on an unseen stimulus and pre-studied case study. MEST 2 - Practical unit, internally assessed and externally moderated. How will I be assessed? A2 Level MEST 3 - 2 hour examination externally set and marked on 2 unseen stimulus pieces and an essay on pre-studied independent topic. MEST 4 - Practical unit, internally assessed and externally moderated. Media Studies helps you develop a number of skills: an ability to analyse how media products are constructed; how to produce media products across different platforms and how to do individual research. As the media touches every person and every profession, the subject has a really broad application; it prepares students for university study and/or a career in media and the creative industries.
