Planning and Participating in Countryside Walks

This course is suitable for those who would like to take up walking and develop outdoor skills. Family walkers, couples, individuals, those looking for a new healthy activity, all welcome. You do not need any formal qualifications to do the course. No previous knowledge of the subject is required. You do not need to be able to read a map or be an experienced walker. You will be introduced to basic map reading skills, equipment and clothing necessary for walking and aspects of the countryside code. You will be able to participate in 3 evening training walks with the tutor as part of the course to follow a route on a map, put your equipment to the test and appreciate safety. In addition undertake a minimum of 2 extra easy walks in your own time and bring evidence along to the class. You will learn through demonstrations and practical work with a partner or group. Walking is a social and healthy activity and this will be reflected in our learning. Your tutor will continually observe and support you and give you regular feedback about your progress. We will take you on easy grade evening walks within the city limits to develop your skills outdoors and for the tutor to observe your new skills in practice. NOCN Entry Level 3 Award in Skills for Employment, Training and Personal Development Your tutor will be able to advise at the end of the course. All classroom materials are supplied. You will need some very basic walking equipment such as warm clothing, coat, hat, gloves and trainers or good shoes/boots and a small torch. Bring normal stuff from home, no need to buy anything. Tutor will give advice before each walk.
