Introduction to Mental Health

This course is a good starting point if you are considering studying for a mental health qualification. With the other learners in your class, you will learn what is meant by 'mental health' and consider the definition and causes of mental health difficulties.You will explore common perceptions of mental health difficulties and how stereotyping can affect people's perceptions. You will also develop knowledge of the rights of those who experience mental health difficulties and learn where appropriate support can be sought.Your tutor will also support you to improve your English and maths skills alongside your learning of your vocational subject. This will include assessing your current skills and planning learning activities related to your subject that are designed to develop your skills in these areas. No previous knowledge of mental health is required.This course is suitable if you are looking to start a career in Health & Social Care or a support/advisory service.You can check the suitability of this course for a preferred career path or route to employment by looking at various job profiles on the National Careers Service website: www.nationalcareersservice.direct.gov.ukA good knowledge and use of English language at Level 1 is required for this course. If English is not your first language you may need to provide proof of an English language qualification or attend a Skills Check session prior to enrolment. You may wish to progress to a Level 2 Certificate in Mental Health Awareness, or consider other courses relevant to working in the Health and Social care sector such as Drug and Alcohol Awareness or an introduction to Counselling Skills.There are a range of courses available to help the development of skills for work.
