UPDATED 20160929 13:44:22

The AAT Foundation Certificate in Accounting teaches students how to work effectively in finance using a range of basic accounting principles and techniques, from costing and double-entry book-keeping to computerised accounting. The course forms part of a recognised route for those entering the accountancy profession. A student studying for this qualification will develop skills in double-entry book-keeping and will learn how to use journals and control accounts. Students will also learn how to use an accounting software package (e.g. SAGE) and how to process financial information. The course involves 5 mandatory units (four unit assessments and one synoptic assessment, these are all computer based and time limited). Book-keeping transactions, book-keeping controls, elements of costing, using accounting software and work effectively in finance. The aim is to take students through the basic process of entering financial data, preparing reports and understanding financial controls for both manual and computerised accounting systems. There will be a chance to look at how a business records and calculate costs and a consideration of stock control. The use of ledger systems and preparing bank reconciliations are also useful skills that will be introduced during the course. There is an intention to give students an understanding of the demands of working within the finance function of a business or in an accountancy practice. This course can lead to a career in the accounting and finance sector or further study
