Please consider that the subject is essay based and there will be several timed essays to write in the final examinations. You cannot study this subject and English Literature A-level, unless you choose the combined Language and Literature A-level. What will I do on this A-level? You will study how children learn and develop their language skills; how the English language has changed over time and the rich diversity of English languages that can be found throughout the world. You will also explore the fundamental components of the English language breaking down sentences into their constituent parts, and how writers use language to construct voices and convey their ideas, attitudes and values. How will I be assessed? You will be assessed through exams (80%) and coursework (20%). What options do I have after completing this A-level? You could go on to study English language or literature (or both) at university, as well as other courses such as linguistics, creative writing and journalism. It also goes well with other discursive subjects like politics, history, philosophy and law. Possible career areas might be the media and journalism, teaching, advertising, marketing or law.
