Hurdle making How will this course help me? To learn the elusive skill of splitting thin hazel rods to weave into a strong panel for the garden. Who is the course for? All abilities What can I expect to learn? Introduction to the history and modern uses of hurdles how to select, cut and use suitable timber Tools needed and how to use them correctly How to split hazel rods needed to make the panel Completing a woven panel (hurdle) from the spilt hazel rods. How will I learn? There may be demonstrations, a chance to ask questions and to practice at your own pace. There are no exams or formal assessments. If you think you may need extra help with your learning, please ask your tutor or the Centre staff. We will try to help you. How will I know how well I am doing? The tutor will help you to recognise how well you are doing and what you need to do to improve. This may include developing your own learning plan. Will I have to do any work outside of the sessions? You may be given tasks or activities to complete to practice in between and prepare for the next and future sessions. Your tutor will give guidance at the first session. What will I need to provide? Appropriate weatherproof clothing, sturdy boots or shoes. Other personal protective equipment supplied as appropriate, you may bring your own work gloves. Health and Safety will be covered in the introductory briefing. Will there be any other costs? (e.g. materials, books, registration with a professional body, etc.) You may be provided with a reading list to support your learning. All of the costs of this course are covered in the advertised course fee. What can I do next? You may wish to come on one of our other coppice crafts or willow courses.
