English GCSE How will this course help me? This course will help you to get the confidence and skills to complete your GCSE in English Who is the course for? This course is for learners who need a GCSE English Language. No previous qualifications are required although a level 2 in Literacy is useful. What can I expect to learn? The GCSE is divided into the following units: Unit 1 60 per cent: Exam Reading non-fiction texts plus 2 writing tasks Unit 2 0 per cent: Speaking and Listening. 3 tasks. Results are an endorsement but do not influence final mark. Unit 3 per cent: Coursework 4 tasks (completed in controlled conditions in class). These include the following areas: a) Extended reading task (15 per cent) b) Producing creative texts-2 tasks (15 per cent) c) Spoken Language Study-analysis of how spoken language changes in different contexts (10 per cent) How will I learn? The course is classroom based and will be a mix of taught sessions, small and whole group work. There will be regular reading, writing and speaking and listening assessments. There will be homework every week. How will I know how well I am doing? The tutor will help you to recognise how well you are doing and what you need to do to improve. This may include developing your own learning plan. If you think that you may need extra help with your learning, please ask your tutor or the centre staff. Will I have to do any work outside of the sessions? Yes there will be homework set every week. What will I need to provide? Bring along a pen and paper. A small dictionary may also be useful. Commitment to the course and a willingness to take on the challenge and see it through to completion is essential. Will there be any other costs? (e.g. materials, books, registration with a professional body, etc.) There may be course books to pay for. The tutor will provide you with a list at the first class.
