In this course we will start by reading and discussing our personal responses to North and South, the acclaimed novel by Elizabeth Gaskell. Most of the discussion will be based on close reading of the novel covering the themes that the novel covers as well as the techniques it uses. We will also discuss the novel in the context of the social and industrial history of the nineteenth century and of the role of women in the nineteenth century novel. If we have time we will then progress to another novel by Elizabeth Gaskell, or another nineteenth century novelist, that will be decided by the group. We will follow the same process with this novel, except we will also do a comparative study of the two novels.
