'Suffragette' was one of the blockbuster films of 2015 winning awards for its account of the campaign for 'votes for women'. However the film presented Emmeline Pankhurst as leader of a movement based in London. Many women from across the East Midlands, including Nottingham, contributed. We will explore the stories of Nottingham women including Helen Watts, Edith Annie Lees, Mary Ann Abbott and others plus research accounts of Nottingham riots and arson attacks (including a planned attack on Nottingham Castle). We will then create a public online exhibition about the contribution of Nottingham and Midlands women to the suffragette campaign.
