Students will be introduced to key themes associated with classical Indian miniature painting styles and a comparison between Hindu and Mughal architectural practises in Northern India between the 16-19th century. Analysis will include the relationship between royal Mughal patrons and artists of the empire, materials, techniques and characteristic styles that complimented various Hindu subjects from legendary epics, to the symbolism of romance and emotion expressed by the Ragamala series (musical modes) and Indian landscapes. We shall conclude with the meaning of 20th century contemporary rural village folk and tribal art, and a class visit to a relative exhibition of gallery.
