The seventeenth century saw an explosion of creativity in Europe affecting all the visual arts. The Roman Catholic Counter-Reformation, the emergence of an independent Dutch Republic and the encouragement of the arts by the courts of Great Britain, Spain and France all led to the development of art that is both dramatic and subtle, grand and domestic, public and private. The work of artists such as Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Bernini and Velazquez will be studied in this course which will cover painting, sculpture and some architecture.
