Literature: 19th Century Detective Fiction

Dickens's unfinished The Mystery of Edwin Drood would almost certainly have been a murder story. His friend Wilkie Collins also wrote novels which appealed to the Victorian demans for 'sensation fiction', which chimed in with popular taste for melodrama. The course will study the social and literary reasons for these trends.
