The Technical Baccalaureate is a government backed programme that is designed for talented individuals who wish to pursue a career within the field of horticulture. Horticulturalists in the production horticulture industry apply skills, knowledge and technology to produce fruit and vegetables or ornamental plants. This involves plant propagation and cultivation as well as crop protection and management. Combining good scientific knowledge with practical skills and know-how, this industry suits the technically minded as well as the business entrepreneur. If you are interested in growing and farming, this course could be for you. The course focusses on the production of a range of food crops including salad crops, top fruit, soft fruit and field-scale vegetable growing as well as ornamental production including cut flowers and nursery stock. Career opportunities and starting salaries within the sector are good and there are great opportunities for budding entrepreneurs. The Tech Bac provides an excellent foundation for progression onto specialist courses at university as it is equivalent to 4.5 A-Levels but can also provide a direct pathway into employment within the horticulture industry or onto Higher Apprenticeships.
