Film Studies

UPDATED 20160817 12:45:28

Film is both artistically and culturally important in our times; reflecting and critiquing society, reaching out to new audiences of diverse tastes and attitudes and exploring the boundaries of technology. Film Studies offers students the opportunity to engage with a wide range of different films, challenging and enriching their appreciation of film. A variety of films will be studied including: British, Hollywood and world cinema. Film Studies often provides a pathway to studying Film at university and builds the core skills for a future career in the industry as well as careers into similar industries like journalism, broadcasting and game design. The subject will develop students' approaches to: class discussion, research, critical analysis, creative writing and film journalism. Students will learn the core structures of classical cinema: camerawork, editing, sound, narrative and mise-en-scene. Students will also discover the history of film from its origins in 1895 to the present day, making close textual analysis of a number of key diverse film texts. Students will learn about the film industry across the world, considering the historical and institutional discourse of films and their interactions with audiences. Students will also have the opportunity to carry out creative work across the production process and develop realised scripts and film products appropriate for display. Students will be expected to develop production folders and evaluate their own products using the core structures and their meanings. All work will culminate in a written examination at the end of the year.
