Physics is exciting! Think of the number of applications that depend on a knowledge and understanding of physical principles for their development; space flight, telecommunications, medical technology, internet, avionics, the LHC at CERN, theme parks, the list is endless. As an A level, Physics combines theory with practical work, enabling you to apply your knowledge to our modern technological society. You will also gain a highly marketable qualification that is a passport to a wide range of employment and Higher Education opportunities. These are not just confined to Science and Technology, but are valued in such diverse areas as business management, computing, medicine, financial markets, sales and marketing, meteorology etc.Four topic areas are studied in the first year of the course:Particles and Radiation, Waves, Mechanics and Materials and ElectricityTopics studied in the second year include:Further Mechanics, Nuclear Physics, Thermal Physics and Force FieldsIn addition, you will have a choice of studying a specialist module in either Astrophysics or Turning Points in Physics. This course helps you develop an understanding of the physical processes in the world around us. It emphasises the application of Physics in modern technology by the study of topics including at AS level, Particles Physics, Quantum Phenomena, Electricity, Mechanics, Materials and Waves. Topics are developed further in the A2 course along with option modules that include Astrophysics and Turning Points in Physics. Teaching is by lectures, problem solving sessions and practical work. Support is available to help you develop the mathematical skills needed. Assessment will be through written examinations and practical assignment exercises.
