AS/A Level History

UPDATED 20160811 11:55:12

The study of History helps us to understand and explain the past and, as such, is a fascinating subject in its own right. In addition, the skills that you acquire as an historian: the ability to think clearly; to weigh up arguments and to analyse problems are highly desirable in Higher Education and in employment. History is a popular GCSE subject and AS/A level allows students to develop their enjoyment and understanding of major world events.History is the study of the past primarily through written records. We have an exciting and thought provoking course. During the two years you will study The British Empire between the years 1857 - 1967. How did Britain come to assume such a vast Empire upon which the sun never proverbially set? Why having amassed such a vast Empire did Britain relinquish much of it in a 20 year period after the end of World War Two? The rise and fall of the British Empire provides an interesting contrast to the other examined module - The Cold War 1945-1991. Here we will look at the origins of the ideological conflict between the United States and Soviet Union and how Europe came to be politically divided between East and West by an ‘iron curtain' in the immediate aftermath of World War Two. We will examine how the Cold War developed during the 1950s and 1960s and how the advent of nuclear weaponry intensified the struggle between the superpowers. After the détente of the 1970s, we will conclude the module with an examination of how the Cold War came to an end, along with the demise of the Soviet Empire itself in 1991. The final component of the History A Level comprises an historical investigation. We will look at the history of Anti-Semitism in central Europe from 1789 and consider both the long and short term origins of the Nazi ‘Final Solution'.
