Painters and decorators use a range of paint and wallpaper to enhance and protect a range of substrates. These include plaster, brick, wood and metal. They can work on both domestic and industrial projects, ranging from re.decorating houses to applying finishes to large industrial structures like metal framed buildings. You need to have good communication skills, and have a good eye for detail. Being artistic or creative will also help you succeed. At college you will learn how to: . use painting and decorating tools and equipment safely, . apply a range of oil/water based paints to surfaces including, ceilings, walls, windows, doors and metal, . use a range of access equipment safely e.g. ladders and platform scaffolding, . prepare different surfaces before applying different decorative finishes, . apply a range of wall coverings including free match, patterned papers and embossed, and . produce decorative finishes such as marbling and graining, sponge stippling, stencilling and broken colour
