D300 - The course runs over ten weeks, three hours each week, and is offered at different times and days throughout the academic year. The course involves learning the skills of listening and relationship building in a practical way. It seeks to enable students to become more empathic to the needs of other people by developing increased self awareness. Students should gain good understanding of the concepts and techniques of Person Centred Counselling, built into a three stage model of helping. The course is certificated by the COUNSELLING PSYCHOTHERAPY CENTRAL AWARDING BODY (CPCAB) Topics covered include: Using Initial Counselling Skills Safely Establish the Helping Interaction Communicate Understanding of the Other Person's Concerns Focus on the Other Person's Agenda Use Initial Counselling Skills within the Helping Interaction Use Study Skills within the Learning Process The course is designed to meet the learning outcomes of the 7 units set by the Exam board. Learning is evidenced by meeting criteria based on these 7 units which can be documented in a weekly journal, skill practice feedback from peers and the tutor to produce a complete portfolio. Each session in college will consist of material covering practical listening skills, a basic introduction to some theory (Carl Rogers and Gerard Egan), and short role play sessions using the skills covered in class. To pass the course the portfolio work needs to be marked as 'proficient'. CPCAB see this course as a 'stand alone' taster course, but progression is available to CPCAB's Certificate to Counselling Skills Level 2. The course provides many students with self awareness and developed Listening skills which may enhance their current job roles. It may also be beneficial as an introduction to a career in counselling.
