This course is designed to deepen your understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film. Film extracts are analysed to explore how filmmaking techniques can create meaning. A creative project allows you to plan and produce a photo-storyboard for a short film. Topics such as British Horror are studied alongside a comparison of how the British and American film industry operates. A film club also runs regularly to broaden and enrich students’ viewing experiences. Subject content AS Exploring Film Form: An analysis of how the micro aspects of film (mise en scene, cinematography, sound and editing) can produce meaning and provoke response. Creative Project: A photo-storyboard planning out a short sequence to a film is to be submitted, alongside a short written evaluation. British and American Film: The relationship between audiences and producers in British and American film is studied, alongside British Horror and a comparison of themes and messages in two American films. A2 Small-scale Research and Creative Projects: A small-scale research project is to be conducted on one focus film and two other related films of your choice. A creative project which involves writing a screenplay for a short sequence is carried out alongside a reflective analysis. Varieties of Film Experience: Topics such as Empowering Women in World Cinema and Spectatorship and Emotional Response in Popular Film are studied alongside a critical study of Fight Club. Learning methods You will learn through group work, lectures, practical work, research projects and film screenings.
