Course shortcode: ARC01 A Level Archaeology is the study of past societies through the material evidence that they have left behind. This course will investigate the ancient monuments in our landscape, in order to understand their purpose and meaning to our ancestors. When the Romans arrived in Britain, some 2,000 years ago, many of these monuments were already thousands of years old. What exactly was the purpose of Stonehenge? Was it some sort of astronomical clock? Did the Druids really engage in sacrificing their victims on the Alter stone? Some of the answers to these questions are lost in the mists of time. However, we are able to determine a great deal about the social and religious significance of these monuments using a range of archaeological techniques and ethnographic evidence. Through this course you will gain a strong understanding of the techniques used by archaeologists to find, excavate and interpret ancient sites. It is an advantage to have a basic understanding of science and material technology, but it is not essential. You will need a pair of good boots, a weather-proof jacket and a sense of adventure.
