Light Metals - Casting, Brazing & Smithing - Introduction

Students will be guided through basic skills of silversmithing and metalwork using processes such as: - soldering, piercing, casting, shaping and forming sheet metal, working in non-ferrous metals. The course will be structured around simple projects, through which the practical techniques are taught. No previous experience is required. Those with prior knowledge will work with the tutor to explore the creative potential of each process. Students will be guided through basic skills of silversmithing and metalwork using processes such as- soldering, piercing, casting, shaping and forming sheet metal, working in copper, pewter and brass as appropriate. The course will be structured around simple projects through which the practical techniques are taught. Through an informative induction you will be provided with all the relevant health and safety information needed regarding good workshop practice. By the end of the course you will: • Develop sufficient craft skills and knowledge in working with metal to create small individual artefacts. • Produce samples of materials and techniques • Use hand and soldering tools, equipment, materials and resources correctly and safely according to workshop regulations • Research and develop ideas to develop your own personal ideas in three dimensions. Students will be encouraged to develop their own creative and experimental approach in making. • Produce and present finished pieces to a basic standard of competence. This course will give participants the opportunity to work on and develop individual projects in a personal way and to practice, improve and gain confidence in your practical skills. Discussions with individual students would be supported by demonstrations. Basic materials and tools will be supplied and participants will be advised on appropriate materials to purchase for their work.
