This course aims to give students a broad view of Roman history and what it was like during the time of the Empire. We will look at the cultural, social and political history of the era and examine the lasting legacy Rome has on Europe and the world.Romulus & Remus - The birth of Rome: Myths and Reality. How Rome became the major city state in Italy and its influences. Roman Life & Society - A look at everyday Roman life from the Gods to bath houses, gladiators, slaves and entertainment. The Republic - A look at Rome when it was ruled under the Senate and how they ruled it. The Punic Wars. Hannibal, Dido and Carthage. Roman Literature, plays & culture - A special look at Roman Literature, its influences and legacy. From Tacitus to Ovid. Imperial Rome - After the Republic came the Emperors, starting with Julius Caesar. This week will be a look at how Rome and her Empire changed under them. Roman Britain - A look at Roman influence on Britain and how they forged our country. Two Romes - The break-away of Constantinople as a separate sphere of Roman influence (later to be known as Byzantium). The fall of Rome - Rome as an idea did not end with the Emperors. We will look at how the Western Empire collapsed and how through the Dark Ages the Myth of Rome forged empires aiming to be successors to the Romans. We will also look at how the Roman World itself did not end till 1453.

For those wishing to go onto university, there is Access to Humanities which will broaden your historical knowledge academically. There are no additional costs with this course due to its leisure study nature. However, students may wish to read books or watch documentaries at home in their own time to broaden their knowledge and provide discussion points.
