This free Richmond Jazz School taster session will work on developing your understanding and appreciation of jazz compositions, jazz melody and theory and provide the steps to engage with creative singing and improvisation. The mystery and wonder of harmony will reveal itself as you experience a range of ways to engage creatively with the art of improvisation and further consolidate your jazz musicianship. The session will explore some common jazz forms and songs focusing on understanding the basics of jazz singing within melodic and rhythmic interpre-tation. Practical material will be introduced to explore as a group while ob-serving important relationships with the underpinning theory. You will be introduced to creative and practical activities to be explored and developed with appropriately challenging activities to allow for differing levels of experience. Various themes will be explored throughout the taster such as: • singing melodically • working with jazz rhythm • creating and developing simple phrases • understanding and 'feeling' simple forms in jazz • practical approaches to harmony and theory You will also be given ideas and materials for 'follow on' activities and practi-cal material to further develop the pieces and your playing after the course.
