The course will explore silkscreen printing. Students will learn how to stretch a screen, and how to make different types of screen prints. These methods will include cutting and tearing paper stencils, coating the stretched screen with a photo sensitive emulsion to make photographic images and hand drawn designs that can then be exposed on to the photo sensitive screen. Students will also explore drawing by adding a wax resist, making wax rubbings, applying the wax using a wax tjanting tool or painting onto the screen using a brush Students will be made on paper and other surfaces to obtain exciting effects. Experimenting with overprinting and combining different screen methods will build a varied range of interesting work.Learners will gain a good understanding of how to register the screens in order to overprint precisely and make artwork employing interesting combinations of images, textures and colours. Throughout the course there will be opportunities for the group to look at work, examine ideas and techniques, and learn from peers through group crit discussion and one-to-one interactions. Initially students will work in pairs in order to maximise development, once the students have learnt the basic techniques of the silkscreen printing they will be encouraged to develop ideas in a workshop based environment, to promote confidence and learning, students will support each other, intermediate and advanced students working alongside beginners, sharing experience and knowledge through group discussion. Personal projects will be encouraged with advice and guidance and one-to-one tutorials from the tutor.
