Printmaking: Beginners Plus

A lively and exciting two part course for beginners to explore printmaking and image making focusing on specific techniques each term learning a different technique and method and each term gradually developing and progressing to expand printmaking skills and a repertoire of techniques. Intermediate and advanced students work alongside beginners, sharing experience and knowledge through group discussion, and allocate time developing personal projects with one-to-one tutorials from the tutor. All students are encouraged to engage in set projects directing students to learn different methods to approach the practice and devise different methods of exploring the printmaking medium, applying learnt processes according to a specific brief, the projects are designed to inspire student to explore various methods and adopt a different approach to individual improvement in printmaking skills The theme for these projects is a different each term, in order to promote new ideas, offering an opportunity for the group to look at work, examine ideas and techniques, and learn from peers through group discussion and one-to-one interactions. Students at all levels are encouraged to work toward exhibiting artwork and to enter competitions students will be urged to require a good knowledge of the printmaking environment by visiting art exhibition and print collections.

Entry requirements

Please bring: pencils, a selection of paintbrushes and a sketchbook or notebook Protective clothing is provided, or you can bring your own apron and rubber gloves. The course fee includes most studio consumables (ink, cleaning materials, solvents etc) but you will have to pay for paper, etching plates/ lino blocks etc. These are available to buy in the department at cost price. Further requirements will be discussed at the first and subsequent classes.
