Explore printmaking and image making in this vibrant workshop class. All students work individually to expand and perfect skills and spend time developing personal projects with one-to-one tutorials from the tutor. Working alongside each other in the print studio, students are able to share experiences and expand knowledge through group discussion. Beginners explore different print techniques to build understanding and knowledge, with a different focus each term. In succeeding terms beginners advance to explore different print media and expand printmaking skills and repertoire. The class incorporates set projects alongside working on personal projects. There is a different focus each term, in order for students to integrate new ideas into individual practice. Different tutors are invited to teach a short project to the group to inspire ideas. This offers a different approach to printmaking which is more specific to the guest tutor's own art practice and allows students to develop and adopt new ideas and concepts. All students are encouraged to keep a sketch book in order to keep a simultaneous record of progress and document an individual journey of study. Throughout the course there will be opportunities for the group to look at work, examine ideas and techniques, and learn from peers through group crit discussion and one-to-one interactions. Students at all levels are encouraged to work toward exhibiting artwork and to enter competitions. Students will be encouraged to gain a good knowledge of contemporary printmaking practice by visiting art exhibition and print collections.

Please bring: pencils, a small paintbrush and a sketchbook or notebook to the first class, and drawings, photographs or other ideas to start working from. Protective clothing is provided, or you can bring your own apron and rubber gloves. The course fee includes most studio consumables (ink, cleaning materials, solvents etc) but you will have to pay for paper, etching plates/ lino blocks etc. These are available to buy in the department at cost price. Further requirements will be discussed at the first and subsequent classes.
