Artist's books come in a wide variety of shapes and formats. This course is for people with an interest in bookbinding who would like to experiment with unusual types of books. We will start by making a traditional hardcover book and then move on to more experimental territory. Think about the sequence of book pages - how could you use the format of the book to tell a non-linear story? Do you want to make a book that can be read from left to right, right to left, top to bottom? Could the pages unfold in different directions? Would you like to make a "secret" book that cannot be opened, or one that folds out into a three-dimensional sculptural object? Beginners will focus more on techniques of making books. In subsequent terms, or for students with previous bookbinding experience, more emphasis will be put on personal projects, developing content and form of the book. Visiting tutors will teach workshops in papermaking / creating your own rubber stamps / (…) to encourage students to incorporate a variety of techniques and processes into making their own artist's books.
