During the 19th century Spain and its art legacy inspired many painters from northern Europe and America including Frederick Lewis, Edouard Manet and John Singer Sargent. In turn, Spanish painters of the period were active participants in the major innovations of contemporary art from Romanticism to Cubism. This course considers the relationship between the art worlds of Spain and northern Europe during the 19th and early 20th centuries. In particular, we look at the leading roles Spanish artists played within the Parisian avant garde. More than simply followers, painters like Fortuny, Sorolla, Gris and Picasso helped to shape the development of modern art.
