An introductory course to the Renaissance Art in Italy, c. 1420 - 1520. We will explore styles, techniques, pictorial genres in Florence, Urbino, Venice and Milan, and investigate the personality and cultural background of great masters such as Masaccio, Giovanni Bellini, Piero della Francesca, Leonardo. A general survey of schools and visual traditions will provide absolute beginners with the basics to approach early-modern art, while in-depth analysis of key and carefully selected works of art will give more advanced students the opportunity to improve and refine their knowledge. The course combines two sessions at Morley College (13, 20 Jan) with two visits to the National Gallery, London (27 Jan, 03 Feb).
